As is so common with sailing regattas, we didn’t exactly have typical Nelson conditions for all our visiting sailors. On a positive note, there was wind… it just couldn’t make up its mind about where it was coming from! Cold Easterly breezes and rain made for a tough first few days and the 91 race first round robin was only completed on Saturday morning when a decent northerly blew the sunshine through. With the increasing wind strength, and lack of time, the decision was made to only send the Gold Fleet out with reefed sails.
After the 21 race Gold Fleet round robin, Christchurch Boys came out on top with a perfect set of results. Marlborough Boys were second, Nelson Boys third and Waimea fourth. The top 4 were very close, with only 3 points separating them. It bodes well for Nationals up in Algies Bay in a few weeks.
Marlborough won the Nelson/Marlborough trophy again, but mainly due to the way it is worked out! A point is given to the winning region for every race win in a contest between a Nelson and a Marlborough team. With Marlborough fielding two top teams and a weaker team, and Nelson fielding 2 top teams, three mid-ranked teams and a couple of development teams, the deck was stacked somewhat in Marlborough’s favour!
A massive congratulations to the NBYTRA committee and all the volunteers who made the regatta such a success – even despite the weather!
