Traditionally held over the middle weekend in January, our biannual Whakatu Regatta is scheduled at a great time for families to visit the Nelson & Tasman region and enjoy some fantastic sea breeze sailing in Tasman Bay. This season, the event is scheduled for the 10th & 11th January 2026, and we are very grateful to Solander for coming on board again as headline sponsor. Their support helps us to;
- provide a Green Fleet event with no entry fee to encourage first time youth sailors,
- keep the entry fee down for youth sailors,
- keep powerboats fuelled, and
- support our amazing volunteers with lunches etc… whilst they run the racing.
The event plays host to various South Island Championships from time to time as well as National Championships for smaller classes. This season, it will incorporate the Europe National Championships (likely to include a third day of racing), the Paper Tiger South Islands, and will be an NZIODA Optimist Traveller Series event.
Other classes are invited to contact us on manager@nelsonyachtclub.org.nz if they are interested in hosting a Traveller Series event, or their South Island or National Championships in Nelson.
