Traditionally held over the middle weekend in January, the Whakatu Regatta is scheduled at a great time for families to visit the Nelson & Tasman region and enjoy some fantastic sea breeze sailing in Tasman Bay. The event plays host to various South Island Championships from time to time as well as National Championships for smaller classes. This season the regatta is scheduled for the 13th & 14th January 2024 and incorporates the following:
- Optimist South Island Championship
- OK Dinghy South Island Championship
- Europe South Island Championship
- Paper Tiger South Island Championship
- It is also a Starling Traveller Series Event
This is Event 1 in the Oborn’s Nautical South Island Optimist Traveller Series and participants will need to be NZIODA members if they want their result counted in the traveller series. More info: https://optimist.org.nz/south-island-traveller-series-2023/
We intend to run casual short course racing on the Friday evening (12th).
Clean Regatta – This event will be run as a Sailors of the Seas Clean Regatta.
Other classes are invited to contact us on manager@nelsonyachtclub.org.nz if they are interested in hosting their South Island or National Championships in Nelson.
